Editorial policy
Garden Room Guide publishes guides to garden rooms in Ireland: planning rules, prices, what to look for in a build, and listings of garden room companies. This page explains how we create that content, check it and keep it up to date.
Who writes our guides
Our guides are researched, written and checked by the Garden Room Guide Team. Guides carry the team's name rather than an individual byline, and each one follows the process below before it's published.
We are not solicitors, planners or architects. Our guides explain the rules and costs in plain English. For a definite answer about a specific property, we point readers to their council or a qualified professional.
How we create content
- Research. We start from primary sources: the regulations themselves, council and Government guidance, and figures published by Irish companies.
- Verify. Every figure and rule is checked against its source. Where sources disagree, we say so, or give a range and explain why.
- Write plainly. We answer the question at the top of the page, then explain the detail. We use real examples, like a typical Dublin back garden, rather than general statements.
- Cite. Each guide lists the sources it relies on, so readers can check them.
- Review. Every guide shows the date it was last updated, and is reviewed on a regular schedule.
Sources we use
| Topic | Main sources |
|---|---|
| Planning rules | The Planning and Development Regulations, Government planning circulars, and guidance published by county and city councils. |
| Building and electrical safety | The Building Regulations and the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), which runs the Safe Electric scheme for registered electrical contractors. |
| Tax | Revenue guidance on Local Property Tax and remote working relief. |
| Prices | Prices that Irish garden room suppliers and builders publish on their own websites and price guides. We show these as ranges and say where they came from. |
| Company listings | Information each company publishes about itself, such as where it is based, the areas it serves and what it builds. |
Prices and estimates are always labelled as such. Our cost estimator gives a range based on published prices, not a quote.
Reviews and updates
- Planning and price guides are reviewed at least every three months.
- All other guides are reviewed at least every six months.
- When rules change, such as new exempted development regulations or a change in Revenue guidance, we update the affected guides as soon as the change is confirmed.
When we make a change that affects the advice in a guide, we update its date.
Corrections
If you spot a mistake, email hello@gardenroomguide.ie with the page and what's wrong. We check every report. When an error is confirmed, we aim to correct it within two working days and update the page's date.
Companies listed on the site can ask us to correct or remove their listing at any time.
Independence and advertising
Garden Room Guide is independent. We don't build, sell or install garden rooms, and we don't take payment to write about a company or product.
- Featured listings are paid. Companies can pay for a Featured spot. It is always labelled "Featured" and shown separately from the main list.
- The main company list is not ranked. It is alphabetical, and a listing is not a recommendation.
- Payment never changes our guides. No company can pay to change what a guide says, be mentioned in a guide, or move up a list.
If we add other ways of earning money, such as affiliate links, we'll label them clearly and update this page.
