Small garden room ideas

The short answer

In a small garden, the planning rule that at least 25 m² of garden must remain sets your limit. A 6 × 6 m back garden (36 m²) allows a garden room of up to 11 m². Rooms of 6 to 12 m² work well as offices or studios with built-in storage, a glazed front and furniture placed along the walls.

Ideas that make a small room work

  • Full-height glazing on one side makes the room feel larger and connects it to the garden.
  • A higher ceiling, within the 3 m height limit for flat roofs, adds a sense of space.
  • Built-in storage under the desk or across the back wall keeps the floor clear.
  • Sliding doors don't need space to swing open.
  • Light colours inside and one consistent floor finish.
  • A fold-down wall desk frees the floor when the room doubles as a gym or playroom.

Where to put it

  • At the end of the garden, keeping open space near the house where you use it most.
  • In a corner, so two sides back onto boundaries and the rest of the garden stays open.
  • Facing the house or the sun, depending on whether you want light or privacy.
  • Leave room behind to maintain walls and gutters, and check access for delivery through the side passage.

Common questions

Can you put a garden room in a small garden?

Yes, but the 25 m² open space rule limits the size. Measure the garden behind and beside the house, take away 25 m², and the result is the largest garden room you can build without planning permission.

What is the smallest useful garden room?

Around 6 to 7 m² works for a single desk or a compact studio. Below that it is closer to a shed.
